Linear Barcodes (1D):

These are the barcodes that you usually find imprinted on the consumer goods. Like UPC, they have a number of lines that have different spaces and widths, these lines help store data inside the barcode. 1D barcodes don’t hold a lot of characters. The characters might just range up to a few dozens. Because the more characters we add, the longer the barcode physically gets, which makes it hard to scan through a barcode scanner.

To perform, the linear barcodes should be connected to the database. That means when you scan an item that has a linear barcode on it, the barcode would have to match to the specific item that has been stored in the database that contains the pricing information. Hence it requires a certain barcode system to work.

2D Barcodes (QR Code):

The 2 dimensional barcodes use specific patterns like dots, squares, hexagons, and other shapes that QR codes or Data matrix use to store and encode data. The patterns can be larger or can be much smaller depending upon the data they hold. The more data they hold the smaller they will be. They can hold hundreds of characters at once. It is called 2 dimensional because data is encoded in both vertical and horizontal patterns.

Not only can the 2D barcodes contain alphanumeric information, but they can also store information like website addresses, images, voice files and other data that is in the form of binary information. This allows the label to have information of such large amount without any connectivity to any sort of database.

There is a lot of difference between the scanning of both these barcodes, but one cannot deny that both of them are extremely useful. They are very cheap ways of encoding data onto items which a person can easily do by printing barcode labels using one of the portable printers of TSC & Zebra Malaysia.

The type of barcode an item has imprinted on it basically depends on the item itself. It depends on the amount of information that the item needs to have imprinted on itself. That is why when you look at random and ordinary items from the store you mostly see linear barcodes and not the 2D ones.
